Today's posts
The poem today is ‘Last
week’.
In 1778 Samuel Johnson met
an old friend from university, whose name was Oliver Edwards. He hadn’t seen him for over 40 years although
they both lived in London, and London in those days was not the huge city that
it is today. Their meeting is recorded in the pages of Boswell and a couple of
the things that Edwards said then have since become quotes. Here is one of them.
‘You are a philosopher, Dr
Johnson. I have tried too in my time to
be a philosopher; but I don’t know how, cheerfulness was always breaking in.’
Well, let a little
cheerfulness break in, whatever you are trying to be. It solves most things!
The letter from my terrace today is about stories
and research.
