The poem this
week is ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’. Gainsborough
painted the portrait around 1750. It was still in the Andrews family until 1960
and was relatively unknown until then.
The letter
from my terrace in Palma is number 1, ‘Señor Alejandro’.
‘Johnson of London’. Here is part 17, ‘Dinner at the
Thrales’. Mr and Mrs Thrale often
invited Johnson to stay with them at their house in Streatham. They gave him
their company and added comfort and stability to his rather irregular life and
habits. In return he introduced them to his friends: poets and playwrights,
lawyers and politicians, actors and painters. In fact, they were the most
interesting people in London at the time.
