Today's posts
The poem this
week is ‘Market Day in Barcelona’.
There is another letter from
my terrace in Palma. This week it is ‘Two baked beans tins’.
Today we begin the play
‘Johnson of London’. Some histories of
the literature of Britain have called the 18th century the age of
Johnson. Singlehandedly he produced the first great English dictionary. He
edited the plays of Shakespeare and wrote the Lives of the Poets. He founded The
Club whose members included Burke, Reynolds and Goldsmith. His biography by a
young Scot, James Boswell, has made him famous. After reading Boswell you
expect to bump into Johnson himself as you walk down Fleet Street or turn a
corner into the warren of streets and squares nearby.
