Poetry, not prose, Monsieur Jourdain! Still heard?

Still heard?

Well, yes, I think we are, and by saying ‘we’
I add my name to the list,
Uninvited,
Though the tacit welcome is there for all,
The sword in the stone,
‘Just take a piece of paper and a pen!’

“The unacknowledged legislators of the world”
That’s pushing it a wee bit far,
Don’t you think?
Better to be one of those
Who keep “children from play and old men from the chimney corner”.

A trickle still flows
In the dried-up river bed.
Even in these arid times
Of deafening rock full blast
And 15-minute celebrities.
And if it is enjoyed,
Its voice is always heard.
