The Surprise

When I was looking the other way,

and concentrating on the work to do,

love came up behind me silently

and put her hand upon my shoulder

and ran her fingers through my hair.

‘Is that fair?’ I asked.

‘Is that allowed?’

‘I make the rules’ she said and smiled.

I come and go when I decide,

plan your projects as you will.”

And then I, both shocked and shaken,

turned from the course that I had taken,

I left the job I had in hand,

and loved as deep as I knew how,

and in return love gave to me

the best gifts of life,

with evenings calm,

and happy wakening,

day after day.
